Tricks Trainers Trade
another simple idea that John Sleigh uses to add involvement to his training
programs
Handouts
I rarely distribute copies of my
slides, and never in advance of the presentation.
What I do do is offer to email
copies to anyone that requests them.
My reasons for not distributing
copies of my slides in advance of the presentation:
- I usually have
about three times as many as I use - varying my presentation to suit audience
reaction
- I use slides to refocus attention. If the people who have
become distracted are leafing ahead this is unlikely to work - they have
already seen it.
- My slides often contain information that would adversely impact
on the activities that I use - they contain the answers or a learning point
associated with the activity.
- Sometimes I distribute a handout that contains the graphics but not the
words of the models that I intend to use. This often contains some tales that I tell - maybe in the presentation, maybe not,
but always associated with the content.
There is one exception to the rule: If a participant is vision impaired,
provide them with a copy of the slides in advance so that they can prepare for
the session, perhaps with a colleague if they are blind.
Feel free to use this in your programs. If you would like to help build up
