Arm wrestle
Overview
Participants compete to find who can win the most arm
wrestles in 1 minute.
Application
Energizer.
Timing
5 minutes.
Arrangement
Participants seated at tables.
Process
- Explain to participants that we will be dividing the
seminar into two groups as a result of a task we are about to do.
- Ask participants to select a partner.
- Explain that the first part of the activity is an arm
wrestle. Ask that they wait until you say go.
- Explain that you want them to count the number of
times each participant can place the other person’s hand on the table.
- Say Go.
- After 1 minute, ask how many were able to achieve 20
touchdowns? 15?, 10? 6? 4? 2? 1? 0?
Generally, most will fall into
the 0, 1 or 2 categories
Review
- Ask “what was the objective?” Generally it will be
referred to in terms of winning, overpowering etc. Restate it as “Maximising
the number of times the other party’s hand was “placed” to the table”.
- Seek a volunteer to assist in the demonstration. When
the volunteer has come forward, say: “I want you to see how often you can
place me hand on the table.” Adopt the arm wrestle position. Don’t resist.
Allow the volunteer to place your hand on the table, resume the start
position, allow again, several times.
- Discuss this as demonstration of Directing or
Influencing. Understanding the objective, cooperating to achieve it, getting
rid of preconceptions, etc.
